Press Release 20 January 2012

First App for the Great Ocean Road

Operators are quickly signing up to the first iphone app and matching website for the Great Ocean Road. The coast is buzzing with news of a new local company who own the instantly recognizable domain name greatoceanroad.com and are building both an App and website for one of Australia’s most iconic regions.

Did you know that 35,000 people per month google the 3 words, great ocean road?

More formally registered as Go 2 Australia Pty Ltd, this team of four – Craig Buckingham, Cate Thomas, Martin Tunley & Trish Goodlet – all live on the Great Ocean Road and bring a dynamic mix of marketing and online skills and energy.

Trish Goodlet has left her role as Executive Officer with Otways Tourism & affiliated Geelong Otway Tourism to be part of this vibrant team and develop the new products. Trish explained “the response from operators has been fantastic! We’ve received sign up across a range of tourism businesses including day spas, cafes, surf shops, motels, large resorts, golf courses and many other Great Ocean Road Accommodation venues. We want the App to be a really practical mobile tool for visitors while they are in the region. We have made it affordable for businesses so we can offer a wide range of services. Our focus on social media combined with hands on experience in the industry and powerful domain all contribute to a really exciting outcome!”

Martin Tunley, having recently sold Aire Valley Guesthouse and Restaurant, has been surfing the social media network to the max and has incorporated the name ‘Great Ocean Road’ in numerous streams. Martin proudly gave insight into the range of naming acquisitions explaining “social media is the key to the success of our products and marketing the businesses along the Great Ocean Road. We’ve managed to secure prominent names including Facebook.com/GreatOceanRoad with over 3300 followers and Twitter.com/greatoceanroad. We will be able to promote great deals to travellers from businesses along the Great Ocean Road using our social networks.”

This groups local knowledge and hands on experience in tourism with a combination of skills in marketing, information technology, App / web design and search engine optimisation certainly make for an impressive portfolio.

The Australian app and web designers B2 Cloud are currently building the products. Josh from B2 Cloud was recently quoted on the Gizmodo website:
“We have 6 apps on the go right now. I’m really excited about an App we are building for the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. It’s such a beautiful place to visit and the drive is amazing. The most common question from tourists is “how far away are the 12 Apostles?” The App answers this as well as directing users to thousands of cafes, restaurants and special sights. It will use thoughtful caching meaning it works offline without the dreaded 20+ MB wifi download!”

Enthusiasm is certainly not lacking when discussing the design and content elements of the new products. Trish expressed “we have done the hard yards so that the visitors have all the information at the touch of a button. We are their map, their planner, their guide, their home away from home and their travelling companion. We will provide ‘up to the minute’ information by using mobile innovative technology.” Martin finished up the discussion by happily stating “and the best part is many visitors will then share their experiences with all their friends on our social media streams”.
