Lake Elizabeth

Lake Elizabeth is located on the East Barwon River within the Otway State Forest. The lake was formed after a landslide formed a natural dam wall in 1951. It is a beautiful place to walk.

Features: Walking Trail, Picnic Tables, Toilets, 20 free Camping Sites (hike in/out approx 100 metres from carpark next to river). Fires allowed. No pets. Approx 40 minute drive to Apollo Bay.

Short Walk

Distance: 2 kms
Time: 1 hour
Grade: Easy – Medium
Type: Return

This one hour return walk ambles alongside the river and a billabong to the lake.

A colony of platypus resides here, tread lighlty and you may see some. Usually the best time to sight a platypus is at dawn or dusk. The local indigenous word for Platypus is Barlidjaru, (bar-lid-ja-ru).

Long Walk

Distance: 4 kms
Time: 2 hours
Grade: Easy – Medium
Type: Loop

An extended two hour walk loops the entire lake.

Locals’ Tip: A local tour operator takes people canoeing to better explore the lake and increase chances of sighting the local platypus. Bookings must be made ahead.
