Cape Otway Lightstation, Great Ocean Walk | Cape Otway
Sixth section – Cape Otway Lightstation to Aire River
Type: One way – East to West, car shuttles
The track from the Cape Otway Lightstation takes you through coastal scrubland firstly and past the historic Cape Otway Lighthouse cemetary. The lighthouse families and shipwreck survivors were a long way from doctors.
As you emerge to see the coast there is a route down to the beach to Rainbow Falls. It is very important if you want to see Rainbow falls to do this walk at low tide and low swell. Walking to the Falls will add some extra time to your walk.
If you walk along to Rainbow Falls, you are able to walk all the way along the Station beach back to the track up to the higher track. This is probably the hardest bit as it is sandy.
Nevertheless, if you don’t take the path onto the beach the view from the top of the cliff is spectacular. Further along the track you are able to look back and see the Falls and the colours in the distance.
The walk continues along through some bushland and then down towards the beautiful Aire River. There are a couple of benches on the way down the hill. Sit and enjoy the view.
There is usually no mobile phone reception along this track. Occasionally I have been able to send a text message. The only decent reception I have ever had is at the corner of the road out of Aire River and Hordern Vale Road. Lat: -38.799446 Long: 143.488237.
At the Lighthouse, the only phone reception is from the top of the Lighthouse. Instagram your photos from here. Don’t forget to tag them #greatoceanroad, #capeotway and #lighthouse.
